Egg-cellent

Coloane Village is surprisingly hard to locate despite Macau being merely 25km long. I had intended to grab a shuttle bus from the ferry terminal in mainland Macau to the Westin resort and walk over. It couldn’t have been more than 5km away (note that for some reason, it hasn’t got into my head that hills and unchartered terrains exist in the world) but the 35 degrees Celsius midday sun encouraged a taxi ride instead.

Coloane looks significantly different from both Taipa and mainland Macau, the most obvious being the lack of casinos. At the entrance is Lord Stow’s Bakery, purportedly the first to introduce the Portuguese egg tart in Macau. Unlike its Chinese dim sum counterpart, these tarts feature a firmer filling similar to creme brulee encased in a flaky, not melt-in-your-mouth pastry shell.

One sold for 7 MOP while a dozen cost 60 and you get a box. The shop sold a couple of other oddities like egg white cake (3.5 MOP), homemade yoghurt (15 – 18 MOP) and various cookies as well.

The appetizingly cling-wrapped egg white cake looked like foam and had the consistency and flavor of my mattress. If I ate an unused stress ball, I’d imagine it to taste similar to this. To be honest, I wasn’t too impressed with the tarts either despite eating 6 of them in a day. They were a little too sweet for my liking and I’d prefer a flakier crust but I might be alone in this judging by the horde that descended on the place as I was contemplating the meaning of life from across the road.
